Marc-Angelo SOUMAH
Président de la FFFA
Dear Friends in Sports,
Flag football already plays a vital role in many European countries and is one of the major scopes in EFAF's efforts throughout the continent and beyond. A tournament like Euroflag is a great opportunity to prove that athletic skills, tactical finesse and the potential for exciting games donot need to stand back behind the tackle version of the game.
We invite everybody to enjoy the games of the women's and men's tournaments for these European championships. And of course we especially hope to give food of thought to those attending the games: It certainly requires a lot of commitment to play the game of American Football, but against public perception it does not require the full set of equipment to be part of the action.
Best regards,
Robert HUBER
EFAF President
Flag Football is often seen as the poor relation to "proper" American Football in the world of sports. When someone asks "What is Flag Football?", it is often explained as a simplified non contact version of American Football.
I do not see this situation lasting much longer. Flag Football should and will be seen as a legitimate sport in it's own right that requires skill sets, knowledge and athleticism peculiar only to this sport.
The future of Flag Football in Europe is bright. This is an easy statement to make but it is evident from the increased participation in this and previous EFAF Senior Flag Championships that there is greater interest in Flag Football. With more people becoming aware and taking part in our sport, the competitive levels will also rise. This in turn will drive future growth.
Today in France, Thonon les Bains hosts the EFAF Senior Flag Championship, 2011 and we salute the hard work and organisation required to make this event happen. As I am sure the Local Organising Committee will tell you, nothing just happens. Every detail must be planed and prepared for. The logistics for such an event can seem daunting but when the games have been played, the positions decided and everyone has returned home then the LOC of Thonon les Bains can proudly put their name in the record books and congratulate themselves on a job well done.
Let's continue to grow our sport together.
Greg LOUGHRAN
EFAF Board Member for Flag Football
To be back in Thonon-les-Bains, after the World Championships in 2004, gives a good feeling. 2004 we had 11 teams from all over the world, now we have 11 men teams and in addition 7 women teams from Europe.
Comparing the participating nations for men, you will find almost all the teams from the WC 2004. Newly listed are Israel, Netherlands and Spain. This shows the continuity and the improvement of our sport. But not only the number of teams has increased, the quality of all teams has developed further. The group games of the European Championship 2009 in Belfast have been decided in close games. At that time for example, France our host for now didn’t reach the playoff only by a worse point ratio.
The improvement of the women teams is even more impressing. 2005 in Helsinki there have been often quite clear results between the 5 participating teams. 2009 in Belfast it was totally different. During the playoffs, the four best teams have played thrilling games, the decisions have been made in the final minutes.
As director of the competitions I’m very happy. Flag football from women and men at the highest level and the experienced organizer LIRRAFA will offer the best conditions for the best games ever.
We can expect exciting games at the EUROFLAG Seniors 2011 and I wish all the teams that they will have their best performance.
